Supporting Father Involvement is an Alberta pilot program, so it is only being offered in Alberta!! This is a program which is being implemented by the Alberta Family Wellness initiative. It is created by the Norlien Foundation and dually funded by the RBC. SFI is the first researched based program designed for families to encourage and nurture the parent/ child relationship, especially focusing on the father’s role.
The goals of SFI are as follows:
To increase couple satisfaction.
To improve the wellbeing of the whole family which in the long run impacts the wellbeing and development of the children.
To encourage fathers to draw on family, community and work place resources.
To promote and change community and culture attitudes about fathering and the importance of fathering.
People who take the class will focus on the following areas and topics:
The quality of the couple’s relationship.
The challenges of the parent child relationship.
The importance of access to supports and resources.
How to manage stressors in and outside the family
Genealogy work, they look at the families they grow up in because in shapes who they are as parents and as spouses.
SFI is a gift basket of wonderful things that encourage and remind parents how wonderful they each are and that they each play a wonderful part in their child’s development.
SFI is for couples
SFI is 11 weeks of active, hands on workshops with skilled group leaders
Each week has a specific topic or theme; there are short presentations and group discussions along with exercises and activities. For example, the two dollar dates night.
SFI participants meet once a week for 11 weeks, supper and child care is provided.
There is continued support for the 11 weeks with a phone call from the case manager. ( That would be me.)
oAfter the course is over the Case manager follows up with the participants once a month or more with a phone call.
THIS PROGRAM IS FREE, YES I SAID FREE!!!
Healthy families, healthy children make for healthy communities.
